Choosing the right TCG card sleeves helps protect trading cards from scratches, handling wear, dirt, moisture and everyday play. This guide explains the main sleeve types and how to choose the right fit for your collection.

What are TCG card sleeves?

TCG card sleeves are protective sleeves designed to fit trading cards. Players use them during games, while collectors often use sleeves as a first layer of protection before cards are placed in binders, deck boxes or toploaders.

Standard-size card sleeves

Standard-size sleeves are commonly used for trading cards such as Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering. Always check the dimensions of your cards and the sleeve manufacturer's stated size before buying. Does card sleeve thickness matter?

Matte vs. clear card sleeves

Inner sleeves add another protective layer around a card before it goes into an outer sleeve or rigid protector. They can be especially useful for valuable cards and long-term storage.

How many card sleeves should you buy?

Protecting valuable trading cards

For cards that deserve additional protection, a common setup is a sleeve followed by a rigid 3 × 4 inch toploader. The sleeve helps protect the card surface while the toploader provides structural protection.
