How to Double Sleeve TCG Cards Correctly
How to double sleeve cards: Insert each trading card into a compatible close-fitting inner sleeve with the inner opening at the bottom of the card. Then place it into a matching outer sleeve with the outer opening at the top. Opposing openings add a barrier against dust and incidental splashes, although they do not make the card waterproof.
This step-by-step guide covers double sleeving Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, One Piece and Disney Lorcana cards, plus sleeve orientation, trapped air, sizing, deck-box fit and tournament considerations.
What is double sleeving?
Double sleeving uses two protective layers: a close-fitting inner sleeve around the card and a larger outer sleeve around both. The inner layer reduces direct contact with the card, while the outer layer takes most everyday handling and shuffle wear.
When is double sleeving worthwhile?
It can be useful for frequently played decks, valuable cards, tournament travel and collections that receive regular handling. It also adds thickness and takes more time than single sleeving. For lightly handled cards, a properly fitted single sleeve may be sufficient.
Step-by-step: how to double sleeve TCG cards correctly
1. Start with clean hands, cards and sleeves
Use a clean, dry surface. Inspect the card and both sleeves for dust, fibers, debris and moisture. If an inner sleeve contains particles, replace it rather than forcing a card inside.
2. Fit the inner sleeve with its opening facing down
Gently slide the card into the correctly sized inner sleeve. When you hold the card upright to read it, the inner sleeve's closed edge should be at the top and its opening at the bottom. Do not bend corners or apply excessive pressure.
3. Prepare the outer sleeve with its opening facing up
Use a compatible outer sleeve, with the opening at the top and the closed edge at the bottom. Do not assume all inner and outer sleeves from different manufacturers fit together.
4. Insert the inner-sleeved card into the outer sleeve
Slide the assembly into the outer sleeve gently, keeping the inner sleeve seated around the card. If the inner sleeve creeps upward or catches, stop and realign. Never force a tight combination.
5. Release trapped air gently
Gently smooth the sleeved card to move excess air toward the outer opening. Avoid hard pressure, bending the card or pressing against a sharp edge. Check that all corners are seated and the inner sleeve has not slipped.
Inner sleeve direction vs outer sleeve direction
Inner sleeve: opening down, closed edge up.
Outer sleeve: opening up, closed edge down.
These opposing openings help limit a straight path for dust or incidental moisture. They are not waterproof seals.
Inner vs outer sleeves: size compatibility by TCG
Check both the actual card dimensions and the manufacturer's stated sleeve compatibility. Common formats are summarized below.
| TCG | Typical card size | Sleeve setup |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon | 63 × 88 mm | Standard-format inner + outer |
| Magic: The Gathering | 63 × 88 mm | Standard-format inner + outer |
| One Piece | 63 × 88 mm | Standard-format inner + outer |
| Disney Lorcana | 63 × 88 mm | Standard-format inner + outer |
| Yu-Gi-Oh! | 59 × 86 mm | Japanese-size compatible inner + outer |

Prevent trapped air, dust and sleeve creep
Trapped air: insert slowly and gently smooth excess air toward the opening. Dust: use clean hands and sleeves; discard contaminated sleeves. Sleeve creep: check inner/outer fit, support the inner sleeve during insertion and stop if the card catches.

Double sleeves are only one part of card preservation. Our long-term trading card storage guide explains how to combine sleeves with suitable binders, rigid holders and stable storage conditions.
Deck thickness and deck-box fit
Double sleeving increases the thickness of every card, which becomes especially noticeable in larger decks such as 100-card Commander decks. Check whether your deck box explicitly accommodates your deck size when double sleeved. Avoid overstuffing, which can bend cards or damage sleeve corners. Sleeve thickness is only one factor; see our Card Sleeve Thickness Guide.
Tournament rules: check before playing
Double sleeving is permitted in many competitive environments, but rules can vary by game, format and organizer. Check current requirements for sleeve opacity, condition, uniformity and marked cards. Ensure that sleeves do not make particular cards distinguishable from others.

Frequently asked questions
Should the inner sleeve opening face up or down?
For the opposing-opening method, down. The outer sleeve opening faces up.
Can you double sleeve Pokémon cards?
Yes. Use a standard-format inner sleeve and a compatible outer sleeve, and insert the card gently.
Are penny sleeves the same as inner sleeves?
Not always. Loose penny sleeves may be intended for general storage rather than close-fitting double sleeving. Check dimensions and compatibility.
Is double sleeving waterproof?
No. It can add a barrier but cannot guarantee protection from water or other liquids.
Do I need to double sleeve every card?
No. It is an optional additional layer depending on your handling, storage, card value and preferences.
